Carbon Garden

Carbon Garden is a joint project between the University of Namibia (UNAM) and University of Turku (UTU) to develop areas for research-based carbon footprint offset. Our aim is to create carbon sinks in Namibian forestry and agricultural landscape by developing enrichment plantation methods in degraded forests, agroforestry, and/or fruit tree plantations to increase carbon sequestration. The project is one part of the collaboration in education and research between UTU and UNAM. We plan to develop and utilize the innovations for reaching carbon neutrality in UTU by 2025 and, at the same time, advance Sustainable Developmental Goals in Namibia. Some novel technical solutions, e.g. for producing irrigation water from saline ground/sea water, have already been launched; a small scale solely solar powered desalination plant developed by a Finnish company Solar Water Solutions was opened at UNAM Henties Bay Campus in May 2019.
